Let's Talk about . . .
How To Clean-Up
Our Computers
Here are some easy to follow steps in
cleaning up your computer which will allow you not only to remove the
emails that you have deleted, but also the remnants that are left
behind.
I have both Windows 98 First and Second Edition in my computers, and these steps are basically the same for both. I also know that Milennium Edition of Windows works in the same way from helping others. However, I have not heard of any differences in the clean-up procedure for the XP version.
Removing these files will allow you to use
your system resources more accurately.
First of all, let's discuss the Outlook
Express clean-up procedure. This is the procedure that I
have followed for years. It has never let me down, and helps keep
your computer running smoothly.
- Delete the files that you no longer want in your computer.
This should include those items in your sent folder as well.
- Next empty your deleted items folder.
- Click on Tools/Options at the top of the page and locate
the maintenance folder. Click on the Clean Up Now button and a
new window will open.
Next, click on each of the buttons in the new
window. Answer each of the questions that pop up, YES. Then click on
CLOSE in this window and OK in the Options window.
- At this point we are finished with what we need to do
inside the Outlook Express program and will close it.
- Next click on Start/Find files and type in *dbx* and
search the C:/ Drive for those files.
- And the final step that we need to do is to delete the
deleted items and sent items from the list that is created in
the search by first highlighting them and then right clicking on the
deleted items and sent items line to delete the
files. Once this is done, empty your recycle bin to complete the procedure.
Now all files will be cleaned out and your computer will run more
smoothly. I would suggest that you do this at least once a week
depending on the amount of mail you receive.
Once I have cleaned out my email, I like to also clean
out other files in my computer that are not needed. I am
including an exe file that was created by Bill Scott at Letterman
Stationery which will allow you to clean out other unnecessary files
from your temporary internet files, temporary outlook express files that
do not come out in the clean up procedure, cache files and your registry
files. I will show you with screen captures how to use
the file.
Download the Clean-Up exe. Then open the file and click on
clean up in the upper right corner.
And the file will do everything for you. Once it has
finished, it will ask you to restart the computer. If you look
toward the bottom of the window where i have marked with a red
rectangle, you will see just how many files and mb of space you have
cleaned up.
That's all there is to it, enjoy !
